Have you ever caught a leprechaun? Or found a pot of gold? You’re not that lucky, you say. Sometimes luck is shining down on me. A little over a year ago I had a very lucky day…..
March is a magical month filled with leprechauns, four leaf clovers and the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day.
I never paid much attention to this very green holiday until about a year ago. Which is surprising since green happens to be my favorite color.
As you know St. Patrick’s Day is green, very green: filled with green leprechauns, green four leaf clovers and green beer.
You would think that I would revel in all that green glory. But I’m not Irish. Or so I thought.
One of my greatest passions in life besides cooking and baking is family history. I’ve pondered my obsession with compiling my family tree. I won’t bore you with my conclusions.
Anyway…….. Up until a little more than a year ago I thought I could claim my heritage as being 100% German. Based on 13 years of genealogy research and compiling many many documents on all four of my grandparents. Never assume anything when doing research. I failed to notice for a very long time the place of birth of one great grandparent.
I not only have done research on my own family but I have also researched my husband’s family so that my children will one day have the opportunity to learn about both their parents heritages.
There is a big difference between both of our family histories. While my history is chockfull of German immigrants who left their distant homeland and came to America to make a better life, his family on both of his parents sides are full of patriots who fought in the Civil War and Revolutionary War and will forever be part of American History.
I have to admit I was envious of all that American History running through his veins. And to top it all off he even has American Indian blood coursing through his veins. How much more American can you get?
There was a surprise lurking in one of my family tree branches.
An important part of genealogy research is collecting documentation that supports your relationship to a previous generation.
One lucky day as I was following along a branch on my father’s side of the family I came across a document that had my mouth gaping open. On my paternal grandmothers side of the family a document listed the place of birth from my 3x’s great grandparents Thomas and Johanna Doherty.
Can you guess where they were born with a name like Doherty? Ireland, of course. I am still researching where in Ireland they came from. It takes some time to gather all of the information but I am sure I will one day know where my Irish family came from.
My Irish luck seemed to be shining down on me during that research. I made another discovery with that side of the family. I finally had a possible connection to an American patriot. There is an ancestor there that may have fought in the Civil War. My luck doesn’t end there. It is possible that I may also find an American Revolutionary War patriot through the same line.
Keep your fingers crossed for me. Let’s hope my luck holds out!
